Maharashtra govt abolishes 5% Muslim quota in jobs, education

Mumbai: The BJP-led Maharashtra government has scrapped the 5% reservation for Muslims in government and semi-government jobs, as well as educational institutions.

This decision was made via a Government Resolution (GR).

The Congress-NCP government had initially introduced the 5% quota for Muslims and 16% for Marathas in 2014. However, the ordinance faced legal challenges and was stayed by the Bombay High Court in November 2014. With the ordinance’s lapse, the government has now formally withdrawn all related decisions and circulars.
