Bhopal: In an incident reflecting entrenched caste-based coercion in India, a Dalit family in Madhya Pradesh was brutally assaulted after failing to meet a demand for wheat as a donation to a village temple.
According to Kashmir24, the incident took place in Maharajganj village of Chhatarpur district, where members of the family said a group of men arrived at their home demanding a fixed quantity of wheat in the name of a temple contribution. When the family expressed inability to comply due to financial constraints, the situation escalated into violence.
The victims said that they were verbally abused, dragged out of their house, and beaten with sticks, rods, bricks, and stones. Women and children were also subjected to violence during the attack. At least five members of the family were injured and later taken for medical treatment.
